In the 1920s, the British artist Alfred Thomson (1894-79) created a series of murals for the Duncannon Hotel in London based on Charles Dickens’ first novel The Pickwick Papers.

Depicting Mr Pickwick and other characters from the book, the murals were a popular addition to the hotel until it was demolished in 1931.

This small, 3½ x 2in (9 x 4.5cm), watercolour and bodycolour of Sam Weller, Mr Pickwick’s manservant, is one of Thomson’s designs for the murals. It is priced at £125 from Sarah Colegrave Fine Art, based in London and Oxfordshire.
