A watercolour by Isabel Codrington based on Norse legend that sold for £4200 at Lyon & Turnbull.
Codrington used myths and fairy tales from northern Europe and Scandinavia in a number of her paintings, inspired by stories from her childhood and the Edwardian Pre-Raphaelites she studied with at the Royal Academy Schools.
The 2ft 7in x 18in (80 x 46cm) work was well received around the time it was made and won a silver medal at the 1907 Exposicion International de Arts in Barcelona.
Offered together with the medal and a certificate, it was taken to £4200 (£3000-5000 estimate) at Lyon & Turnbull’s (25/20% buyer’s premium) Five Centuries auction on November 20 in Edinburgh. The lot was one of six consigned to the sale by the artist’s family.
