Clarice Cliff May Avenue pattern teapot, £2600 at Lacy Scott & Knight.
Today the market is far more circumspect but there is still a very strong following for Clarice’s bright colours and strong shapes. And the May Avenue design from c.1933 remains one of the ‘to die for’ patterns.
Two pieces were offered as part of a Clarice Cliff collection at Bury St Edmunds firm Lacy Scott & Knight (22.5% buyer’s premium) on June 16.
Once part of a Bizarre tête-a-tête – typically combining a teapot, milk jug, sugar basin and two cups and saucers – were a Stamford shape teapot and cover and a conical shape cup and saucer. Offered as two consecutive lots, they sold for decent sums of £2600 and £850 respectively. The teapot had a fine hairline to the base of the handle, but the cup and saucer were both free from damage.
Clarice Cliff Green House pattern vase in meiping form, £2000 at Lacy Scott & Knight.
Another rarity was a meiping form baluster vase in the flowing Green House pattern, c.1931. The foot rim had a substantial area of restoration but it took £2000.
Sugar sifters
Clarice Cliff Honolulu pattern conical sugar sifter, £750 at Dawsons.
A private collection of six Clarice Cliff conical sugar sifters in a range of floral and landscape patterns was offered at Dawsons (25% buyer’s premium) in Maidenhead on June 28.
Clarice Cliff Gibraltar pattern conical sugar sifter, £950 at Dawsons.
They sold at prices from £380 for a sifter in Blue Chintz to sums of £750 each for Orange Roof Cottage and Honolulu. Top of the tree was the coastal landscape Gibraltar pattern that made £950.
