The wide-ranging collection spans objects from the early dynastic periods through to the 20th century and includes Buddhist sculpture, early ceramics and Imperial porcelain, jades, cloisonné enamels and scholars’ objects, as well as furniture and classical and modern paintings.

Included among the scholars’ objects is this 5¾in (14.5cm) brushpot dated to the 17th/18th century that has been carved from a single block of zitan (a prized Chinese hardwood). It is fashioned in the form of a tree trunk with lingzhi fungus growing from its sides plus prunus blossom and bamboo.
