English Heritage has bought a Dutch Golden Age painting that had previously been on loan to one of its properties in South Yorkshire.

Wilkinson’s of Doncaster sold 230 pieces of 16th century metalwork from the so-called Pewter Wreck.

Doncaster auctioneer Sid Wilkinson is to sell items from a huge cache of Tudor pewter tablewares recently discovered by professional treasure hunters off the coast of the Dominican Republic.

Known as specialists in early oak and vernacular works of art, Wilkinson’s will host their next sale on November 25 at The Old Salesroom in Doncaster.

DOMINATED as the Doncaster sale at Wilkinsons on 23 February was by solid English oak, it also had its more esoteric moments in the high-price range. But in fact Sid Wilkinson was rather disappointed in the results on these two very different examples of carving.
